Join us for a new kind of CLH monthly event: online led discussions of current topics. Each event will start at 7:30 pm when we will meet on Zoom. The discussion topic will be briefly presented and the rules of the game given. Then we will start opening ‘envelopes’. Each envelope will contain a fact or a theoretical point to take into consideration. Some will be in favour of the evening’s proposition, some against. To discuss each envelope, we will go into Breakout Rooms for 15 to 20 minutes. After this time, the host will bring everyone together again for a quick recap of positions in the different ‘rooms’. The next envelope is then opened and after a shuffle new ‘rooms’ created.
The facts in the envelopes will be prepared beforehand by those interested in the topic. If you would like to volunteer, please leave a comment in the box linked to the event. A page will also be set up in Google Docs to facilitate our cooperation and prepare each individual event.
The Discussion will usually involve about 3 Breakout sessions and take about an hour.
After the discussion, the evening turns into a social, as if we were meeting at a pub after a talk. During this discussion we will welcome suggestions of future topics and possible modifications of the process.
If you have not used zoom before, we recommend you download the phone or desktop app prior to the event and have a look at the Zoom guide for your device/computer. You do not need a Zoom account to join this event but you can register for a free account.
We have successfully held Watch Along, Book Group and socials using Zoom. It takes some getting used to but very quickly discussions started and conversation flowed. However, this might be the first time for some participants so please be patient with everyone on the night. If you have any technical difficulties prior to the event, leave a comment below. and we will try to help out. During the event, you can also leave the ‘room’ you have been assigned and talk to the host.
Whether you’re non-religious, questioning your previously-held beliefs, or just an open-minded person looking to mingle, these events could be just right for you. You can expect to meet interesting people, network with community activists, and have a lively discussion on an issue of the day.
We encourage dialogue, debate and sharing of information at our events but ask people to keep their interactions cordial. Any views expressed are those of the individual sharing them and may not reflect those of the CLH.
